Thinning Hair?

Men begin to experience hormone imbalances as early as their 20′s.  One of the first signs of hormone imbalance includes thinning of the hair.  Due to toxicity, nutritional deficiencies, and stress, anabolic hormones can convert to less desirable hormones such as DHT and Estrogen.  Men begin to lose about 2% of their natural production of testosterone starting around age 20, so typically by the age of 40 a man could potentially have a 50% loss of testosterone. According to the CDC, potassium iodine is great for protecting people against radioactive iodine, which is one of the things released in the Japan nuclear reactor explosion. However, it only protects the thyroid gland. It does not protect the rest of the body.

Here’s how it works: after a radiological event, radioactive iodine may be released into the atmosphere. It can then enter a human body by being breathed into the lungs, or being ingested through contaminated food or water. The CDC calls that “internal contamination.” The thyroid gland could be easily damaged by the chemical, as it readily absorbs iodine, but the potassium iodine blocks the radioactive iodine from being taken into the gland.

Potassium iodine cannot protect against radioactive agents, such as cesium, which was also released in the Japanese reactor explosion. It cannot prevent an agent from entering the body and damaging other portions, such as the lungs if ingested via breathing. It cannot reverse the damage caused by radioactive iodine once it has been done to the thyroid.

In effect, what Japan is doing with their implementation of a distribution of potassium iodine is protection against radioactive iodine, but that is it. It will be good against thyroid damage, but as an extreme example, you couldn’t have save someone from the effects of the radiation from fallout from the Nagasaki or Hiroshima atomic bombs through the use of iodine.

Because we use a physician-grade iodine supplement, it is available by prescription only to ensure there are not any complications to your health. If you get any heart palpitations while on iodine, discontinue immediately.

It is your responsibility to keep track of the number of refills you have left. No physician or pharmacy will give you reminders. Read the bottle label for the number of refills remaining and the expiration date of the prescription.  By federal law, testosterone prescriptions expire after 6 months.  Other prescriptions for sleep, anxiety, or pain may have even shorter expiration dates (some are only 30 days).

If you have no refills left on your medication prescription, it means that you are either due for a follow-up visit with Dr. Sina, or need to do some labs:  Your directions are outlined on your Treatment Plan. If you are unable to make an appointment or do labs if required, but need an emergency refill until you are able to come in for a visit, we can authorize and write you a one-time, Emergency Prescription Refill. Again, it is important that you track your own prescriptions so that an Emergency Refill is not necessary.

There is a $25 charge for prescriptions written outside of an office appointment. This is because it takes Dr. Sina time to review your chart and labs, and to determine if new labs are needed before the prescription can be refilled. She cannot simply ‘call in a prescription’, as most are controlled substances and it is her legal and ethical responsibiliy to oversee your patient care, especially in regards to prescriptive medications. Emergency Prescription Refills are for a 30 day supply of medication only, and this charge does not apply to refilling supplements in our store. If you prefer, you can have a brief appointment to obtain your refill (for more than a 30-day supply), along with the opportunity to discuss other health issues.

Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy is not standard of care medicine and requires a specialty pharmacy to fill. If you are receiving hormone replacement prescriptions for the first time, Dr. Sina generally writes them for a 60 day supply.  This is because she will need a follow-up appointment to determine whether or not your dosages need adjusting.  This fine-tuning process for hormones is more complex and challenging compared to other kinds of medications. ***Please note it can take 2-3 weeks to feel a response from new or revised hormone formulations. Please allow 2 weeks for medication refills to allow time for Dr. Sina to write the prescription, the pharmacy to create it, and time for mailing if applicable.

PLEASE DO NOT LET YOUR MEDICATIONS RUN OUT WITHIN A 1-2 WEEK TIME PERIOD BEFORE GETTING YOUR PRESCRIPTION REAUTHORIZED.  We cannot expedite the process any faster, so please plan ahead and make sure you either have your appointment set up or start the emergency refill process far enough in advance as to not run out.

Medical Malpractice

Please be aware that Dr. Sina no longer is carrying medical malpractice.  There are only two malpractice companies that cover Naturopathic Medical Doctors.  Many of the alternative medicine treatments and off-label uses of medications such as hormone therapy and chelation are no longer being covered by malpractice companies.

This form is clearly posted in our office, and as a  patient at Breakthrough Medicine you acknowledge that you understand our policies.

About 4 years ago, patients began asking me to prescribe HCG (“human chorionic gonadotropin”) for weight loss. When they told me about the 500-calorie diet, I laughed and said “no way”. Interestingly, after attending a medical conference, I ran int o a colleague who I admire, and we were trading info on promising new therapies. When she told me she had done HCG and now uses it in her practice, I was flabbergasted. She then asked me if I had read Dr. Simeons’ Manuscript; admittedly, I had not. I promptly pulled his manuscript off my shelf, which a patient had previously given to me, and I was humbled; Dr. Simeons’ manuscript was brilliant and made complete sense.

“Pounds and Inches: A New Approach to Obesity”, by Dr. Simeons, was written decades ago when obesity was rarely seen. Today obesity is an epidemic disease, and we are finding more and more its pivotal role in creating a host of chronic illnesses. After reading this book, I decided to take my most weight loss resistant clients and together we embarked on an experiment.
